Preserving character with thoughtful relocation, renovation and construction
There is an older neighborhood in Bethesda, close in and quite well located. Known as Woodhaven, it was built in the early 1930’s, an interesting time to build houses. The houses that were constructed by that builder were designed in the Tudor style, and typically modest in size.
One day Stinson happened upon one of these houses for sale that sat astride two lots. As it was not Stinson’s nature to demolish houses that have some historic value and contribute to the character of the neighborhood, he decided to relocate the existing house to one of the two lots, renovate and enlarge it, and build a new house in the Tudor style on the now vacant lot. The existing house would be situated on its new lot at 6322 Alcott Road, expanded, renovated, and coupled with a small two-story carriage house. The new house was constructed at 8311 Whittier Boulevard.
